IT questions

If you’re an IT professional and you’ve reached this page, it’s probably because your regulatory or pharmacovigilance colleagues have decided they want to purchase our software and you want to know what will be involved from an IT point of view. This page aims to answer the questions you might have.

What's the architecture of the Samarind RMS and what database engine does it use?

The Windows version of Samarind RMS is a VB.NET front-end application with a Microsoft SQL back-end database. The application resides on a shared drive and connects to the database using either Windows authentication (single sign-on) or LDAP.

Microsoft SQL 2005 or later is required. A dedicated server is not necessary except for larger installations. Virtual machines are fully supported.

No client-side installation is required except for the Crystal Reports run-time engine, which many organisations already have installed for other packages. Citrix, Microsoft terminal services and RDWeb are fully supported.

For more information please request our IT Infrastructure Recommendations document.

What hardware is required to deploy Samarind RMS?

A Microsoft SQL server is required, however it doesn’t need to be dedicated to Samarind RMS unless you anticipate large numbers of users (50+) or data volumes (10GB+).

The application itself can live on any network share. We do not recommend the application files live on the SQL server except in very small installations (fewer than 10 users).

For more information please request our IT Infrastructure Recommendations document.

What is your recommended backup strategy for Samarind RMS?

We highly recommend that the RMS SQL database is included in a standard SQL maintenance plan for backup and maintenance purposes. The .BAK file produced should then be backed up separately either to tape or to another server. All data is held in a single database, which significantly simplifies the backup and restore process.

We do not recommend that the database be backed up purely by ‘agent’ software while SQL has the files open, as this does not usually perform the necessary SQL performance maintenance tasks that are essential to the health of the database.

Are Samarind RMS licences 'per seat' or concurrent?

Neither really – they are ‘per active user’. This is similar to ‘per seat’ but the allocation of seats can be moved around very easily by an administrator of the system.

With Samarind RMS an ‘active’ user is one who is in the list of people allowed to access the system and has their logon ticked as ‘Active’ within that list. We also differentiate between ‘read-write’ and ‘read-only’ users. The ‘active’ tick can be moved around by an administrator of the system (usually someone in the IT team) as required, with only the licensed number of read-write and read-only users being allowed to be active at one time.

What involvement will you need from our IT team?

We will need your IT team to provide the necessary servers, with the prerequisite software already installed, and do a small amount of Active Directory configuration (set up groups and members) prior to installation.

We will also need them to provide us with remote access to the Samarind RMS server(s) for support and maintenance purposes, and ensure that the RMS databases are included in your backup/disaster recovery strategy.

How long does installation of Samarind RMS take?

The installation on the server(s) can be completed in as little as half a day, if all the prerequisites are in place. Client installation takes about 10 minutes per machine, depending on the spec of the PC.

We also provide a completed IQ document following the installation of the software on your server(s).

Because of the architectural design, upgrades of new releases are straight forward.

Can you help us with validation?

Yes of course. We recognise the importance of computer system validation and do everything we can to make your job easier.

  • We have pre-built validation packages for all our modules. These comprise a full set of GAMP5-type validation documents, fully completed except where they need information from you – the names of the people in your validation team for example. You can then fill these in and use them ‘as is’ or tailor them to your own requirements.
  • We can also provide you with consultants who can help oversee the validation process and/or help execute the scripts.

We also provide a completed IQ document following the installation of the software on your server(s).

What about hosting?

Samarind can host your solution in a highly secure, qualified environment that withstands the toughest of audits. Samarind RMS will be setup and managed for you including but not limited to backup and recovery, secure two layer security access and application monitoring. This type of implementation minimizes the efforts for our clients on any IT infrastructure, application implementation and maintenance. A perfect solution for any regulatory professionals that rather concentrate on the job in hand than the IT infrastructure supporting it.

What about solutions for the cloud?

Samarind RMS comes in two flavours, Samarind RMS for Windows® and the entry package Samarind RMS On-Demand. Our On-Demand is a cloud solution, hosted by Samarind and accessed via a simple browser interface. No further IT infrastructure is required on client site. A desirable solution for any small company that has to comply with the ever changing regulations in a competitive market.
